Sam Bowyer

I joined the Compass CDT in September 2022, just after finishing an MSci in maths and computer science at the University of Birmingham. My masters dissertation involved analyzing the fairness and efficiency of different tournament systems and constructing new systems through reinforcement learning. I also completed an internship at the West Midlands Regional Economic Development Institute (WMREDI) where I helped set up the Data Hub which policy researchers could use to access automatically updated and collated datasets.

I’m currently in the third year of my PhD, having mostly focussed on scalable and parallelised Bayesian inference methods for hierarchical models, however, I’ve since begun looking into Bayesian alignment and finetuning for large language models (LLMs). I recently wrote a Compass blog post on this topic which you can read here.
